they did a nice job of copping the design, however I notice several fatal flaws in the design which where really obvious to anyone who has ever been in the military.
1) the LED counter though that was where they put it in the movie, in fact would be an easy to pick-out target at night the way it works, also it doesn't actually give the information in an easy to see location would be better if it was a non glossy LCD just under the sights.
2) Ammo, the location and the way you ad the ammo was not fluid or easy, the guy kept struggling to swap cartridges, these moments could get you killed.
Granted to build a working weapon from a classic Sci-Fi was really cool, but it goes to show the Arms designs in movies usually wont work well in real life. however I think the concept is still a valid one but needs to be tweaked a little and then it would be a sell-able concept.

Having been in the military, I present an argument for why impractical designs like this often wind up in the hands of the common soldier. This argument consists of a mere five words: Made By The Lowest Bidder.

Having been in the military, I present an argument for why impractical designs like this often wind up in the hands of the common soldier. This argument consists of a mere five words: Made By The Lowest Bidder. tell me about it, I was in the Marines and they usually get the Hand me downs from every one else. and anytime the Marines actually have something build its always less expensive and highly specialized. think Harrier jump jet, cobra Attack helicopter, Osprey, and my favorite M249 light machine gun... BTW the S.A.W. is now in all BOS, but it was a Israeli and USMC design. (now I looked it up on wiki and they don't tell the whole story of the SAW, yes the US Army paid for the initial development but they dropped it and Israel picked it up and finished the design work, all the early tests where done in Israel. The US Army did order it 1st however they didn't get many and it was never deployed, where as the USMC got it and deployed it as soon as they got it. it took the 1st gulf war to prove its worth to everyone but the USMC. I know since that was my war. and the one I had was Made in Isreal by FN)
