So, Civ V apparently came out today. Thoughts? Opinions? Arguments about which country is better at warfare, The Japanese or the Aztecs?

So far, I like it. Its a bit slower to start out (which is more likely due to me not knowing my way around the interface as well) but I really think that it looks a bit more refined than Civ 4. All in all, I've found it enjoyable thus far, but I have yet to find a civ that I really enjoy

Sure is pretty. I've got about 10 minutes in it, and it plays very nicely runs a little slower. (of course I play huge maps with 8 players sooo). Hope to get few hours in this weekend.

Well, Mr Sare just went to bed after playing it for about 22 hours straight, so I think he likes it... He did complain there was no video cutscene when he finally won a game though.

I'm not sure how long it'll last, but for the time being anyway you can use the coupon code D2DTWITTER at direct2drive.com and knock $10 off a purchase of $49.95 or more. Oh, look. Civ V costs $49.95.
That was enough to make me give in and buy it. Downloading now.

Better yet, they had a back to school promo with the same savings a few weeks back, when I could have preordered it and gotten the first DLC for free (and a free copy of Civ 3, but who cares about Civ 3?). Wishing I'd thought to preorder it then.

So...should we get together sometime and play?

Chesh and I were talking about that earlier. The answer is obviously yes. It might not be a bad idea to put off any organized games until next weekend or so, just to let folks get a feel for the game and get comfy with it. Not that that should stop anyone from throwing together a game if they feel like it, of course.

That would be awesome. I am a builder by heart, so I love it when I can find a good warmonger to team with!

If it makes you feel any better, Sharky, it's turn based rather than real time. Which IMO is a plus, but that's just me. It also requires Steam, so if you're still not wanting to use Steam then this one is a pass.

Why wouldn't you want to use steam? Steam rocks! Also, interesting things about RTS games: they're neither "real-time" (real battles take days, not minutes), nor are they "strategy" (strategy is about long term goals, not combat maneuvers). A more accurate term for games like Starcraft would be "accelerated-time tactics", but try getting that to catch on.

Maybe something like Rapid Tactical Simulation? That way, they can keep the acronym.
