Anyone try out the CoH:F Beta on the Test realm.
Finally got it to finish downloading and installed today. I've been playing around quite a bit. Certainly adding a lot of tweeks.
I get the sense they are definitely trying to add more value to the game. Lots of options, lots of new ways to manage enhancements and inspiration, including adding all new enhancements and inspirations, not counting the usual offering of new powersets and costume options. Also it's very shiny, lots of graphic updates, which is great for keeping up with the times, although they still can't be bothered to update the actual character models that we see 90% of the time. So enjoy your blocky low poly toons in the new high res world.

By updated graphics I think Caios means "putting Praetoria level visuals in atlas park"

There were a few engine upgrades to boost the graphic details, but again with so much old shit that desperately needs to be up-Res'd in the game, it just doesn't have the whole effect. So in essence, like Shade said, think Atlas Park redone with Preatoria visuals. It's shiny but not impressive.

Well, that is better than nothing. Is it literally just Atlas and Galaxy, or are the other old outdoor zones updated as well?

I doubt we'll ever see an update to the player models in City of Heroes. If you think of all the content that is based on those player models, its easy to see why.
Every costume piece. Every animation. Every power. Almost every NPC. All based on the old models.
Replacing all of that would take a massive amount of effort.
It'd be worth it though.

It seems like they could at least update the textures to higher resolutions. From what I've read that doesn't involve an insane amount of work, and it wouldn't require changing anything else about them.

Every animation. Every power. Almost every NPC. All based on the old models. Replacing all of that would take a massive amount of effort. It'd be worth it though. The thing is, they already have a system in place to allow for easy implementation of higher polygon models. Their LOD system will automatically shift down to lower poly models when they get far enough away, or when your graphic settings are low. It would be easy to change that to add an extra level of detail at higher graphic settings with higher res models. The high end models would have absolutely no effect on animations or powers since those are based off the current skeletons which would remain unchanged. Due to the way the models are built to be interchangeable and scalable, they really only need to update 3 models. ( for the three player options, screw the NPCs; though in many cases this will improve the NPCs as well since many of them just use the same character creator ) With all the costume options it would still be alot of work, but not nearly as much as some people think, and as you said, it'd be totally worth it. Honestly it kinda pisses me off that they don't put the effort into doing that.

OK, so I knuckled under and resubbed to check this stuff out. I haven't gotten in game yet, but I did check those screenies out, and damn they do look great. I'm still wondering though, are the other old zones also updated? I suppose I'll log into the beta tonight and have a look.

So far the only changes are to atlas park and mercy island, and that's to have the "oooh shiny!" factor for the f2p players when Freedom goes live. As far as I know, everything outside of those two zones is exactly the same. So it'll be like Praetoria where it seems soo great, and then you get thrown in talos island and you see just how dated the game is. Just that this time you'll get through the tutorial and atlas/mercy, where it seems soo great, then you get thrown in kings row/port oaks and see just how dated the game is.

They'll probably go back and update nearly every zone, it will simply take them a lot of time to do it. Updating all of Paragon and the Rogue Isles would take a long time, but thankfully they don't have to do it all at once.

completely agree with GV, that's the sort of thing they'll probably get around to. I think updating the character models themselves would make a much bigger impact then refitting the rest of the game like that.
In the end, I have to admit they're adding enough cool bonus stuff to this game that I will probably want to keep my VIP subscription going.

For those still unaware, the I21 Head Start begins on the 13th, so if your account is active then, you get early access to Issue 21 on the live servers. Not sure how long it will last, but long enough to make new beam rifle or time manipulation characters and level them a bit before the influx of freebs come rushing in.
