So has anybody else been reading about this Arma 2 mod Day Z? It's a hardcore multiplayer survival horror game that's looking pretty interesting despite only being in alpha and the fact that I don't think any of us besides Chesh has Arma 2. I'm thinking about picking it up when the Steam summer sale kicks off (it's on sale now on Amazon, but I've read that the Amazon version doesn't play well with Win7). RPS has some coverage here, and there are a few Youtube vids up of it. Sound interesting to anybody?

I've seen some talk about this mod and it looks pretty cool. I've never played ArmA multiplayer though.
It's a cool game on its own and if it goes on sale I do recommend it if you're interested in a very realistic military simulation shooter, but one warning is that it is a MASSIVE resource hog. I can't even run it close to the maximum settings and get any kind of decent framerate.
As for the mod itself, it seems like it would best be played with a group of friends - you can run in to other people playing on the server and group up but having a small group of people that you know would help just because you could coordinate a spot to meet ahead of time in case you spawn far apart, also you don't have to worry about them killing you (the mod is fully PvP enabled). Player Killing is discouraged, but not banned; if you want to be a raider/bandit type you can be, but killing players gets you a special skin that marks you as such so people will know to watch out for you.

Yeah, it's definitely something I'd want to give a try with a group, it looks like it alternates between boring and frustrating while solo. With a group and a little organization it seems like it could be a good time, though given Arma 2's reputation for bugginess and Day Z's alpha status one never knows.

It seems like it'd be interesting, but permadeath anything just turns me off, especially in games where it's insanely easy to get yourself killed
edit: But I picked it up on amazon for $15 anyway...Doesn't activate on steam, which is a bummer, but not a deal breaker.
edit 2: Status report! The game is pretty much just a deathmatch game with zombie survival aspects in it, especially since they're removing the bandit skins (now you can find skins!) and humanity (for something later down the road). The game basically works like: avoid zombies, see a survivor? Kill him, because there's a 99.9% chance he'll just kill you, anyway.
Maybe someone who has played more than I have can shed more light on this? I suppose $15 for ANOTHER deathmatch FPS game isn't too bad, but still.
